Musk Melons are a delicacy, and this particular one in the picture below in a store in downtown Tokyo was Y216,000, that's ~$216!
This muskmelon is from Shizuoka prefecture. In the summertime the melons are kept cool with air-conditioning; in the wintertime, kept warm with heaters. And, on each plant only one melon is left to grow while all of the others are cut off. This is so that all of the water and sunlight will be used to nurture the one melon.
Is it good value compared to the $9 strawberries, that is $9 each strawberry; or $16 for a single mandarin?
Why not try the $432 fruit basket?
You can by all these from Sembikiya, the fruit store established in 1834, oldest in Japan.
