Room To Read

Last Wednesday evening at the National Library of Singapore, John Wood, the author and founder of the Room To Read charitable organisation, launched his new book titled Creating Room To Read - A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy.

John read passages from his book and gave insights on how Room To Read is changing the lives of so many young children, especially girls who otherwise would not have access to even a basic education, throughout SE Asia and Africa.
Room To Read build libraries within existing schools as well as stand-alone libraries, publish books in local languages and enable 1,000s of girls to participate in and complete their studies.

Last Thursday we attended the Singapore 2013 Gala - Destination Global Literacy function at Pan Pacific Hotel. An excellent night with over $2m raised by the ~350 guests.

Sreymom, a 19 year old Cambodian girl, spoke of how Room To Read allowed her to attend school and  complete her secondary studies. She is the only girl in the family of five and her parents asked her to quit school at Grade 6. She is now studying Rural Development at the University of Agriculture in Phnom Penh. One of thousands of great outcomes.

This will be the first of many RoomToRead related posts as we have joined the battle for global literacy.   http://www.roomtoread.org
